Hello and Welcome!
Semiarid Honey is an apiary based in Kamloops, BC, Canada.
Our honey is minimally processed without pasteurization. The honey is gravity fed through 600-400 micron filters, leaving all the naturally occurring pollen, enzymes, fine wax particles and flavour compounds intact.
In North America most store-bought honey is heated to high temperatures to enable the honey to pass through small-micron filters in order to remove pollen and other fine particles. Store-bought honey is also routinely finished through diatomaceous earth. This processing destroys the enzymes and alters the flavour compounds as well as removing the pollen.
Why are pollen and other fine particles removed from store-bought honey? Natural raw honey crystallizes over time. Big grocers do not want crystallized honey on their shelves, and will remove it and charge-back the supplier. Consumers have grown familiar with a super clear product as a result.
Pollen in honey is like a fingerprint. The pollen in honey can be examined to reveal the plant sources and geographical region and country of origin. Our natural honey is your guarantee of authenticity.
The World Health Organization Codex Standard for Honey states that "No pollen or constituent particular to honey may be removed except where this is unavoidable in the removal of foreign inorganic or organic matter." We agree! Our honey gladly meets this standard.
Big processors consider their filtration methods "unavoidable". We consider them "unfortunate". Try our delicious alternative instead!

Here are the results of our latest honey sample analyzed for pollen content by DR. Vaughn M. Bryant, PhD, Professor and Director, Palynology Laboratory, Department of Anthropology, Texas A&M University:
Please take note that if you buy honey labelled as "Fireweed", "Clover", "Blueberry" etc, greater than 45% of the pollen must be from the named predominant source. This is why our honey is properly labelled under International Standards as "Multi-Floral".
